Folklorama - DOTC First Nations Pavilion

For DOTC and its partners, the convening of the "DOTC First Nations Pavilion" is an incredible opportunity to showcase and promote the talent of the First Nations and its people. In 2011, over 432,000 people visited the 43 pavilions hosted by the various communities in Winnipeg. As well, the Pavilion is designed to serve as a bridge to outreach and dialogue with non-aboriginal communities in Manitoba. An important component of this dialogue was the publication of the "DOTC First Nations Pavilion Magazine" distributed for free to those visiting the Pavilion.

As part of Folklorama 2011, DOTC initiated and convened the “DOTC First Nations Pavilion”. The pavilion was located at the Riddell Hall, University of Winnipeg.

Working in partnership with University of Winnipeg, the DOTC First Nations Pavilion was seen as success by all.

In addition to the art and music that was showcased and shared, the Pavilion also sought to incorporate an educational and awareness component in all its activities. Drawing from Nations of this region, the demonstration of Pow Wow and other dances was accompanied with an explanation of traditional regalia, dance styles and history.

The pavilion focused on traditional and contemporary food- rice pudding, bannock, Indian tacos, bannock burgers and pemmican. Visitors also had the opportunity to peruse display booths and, purchase art, cd's, traditional clothing, such as moccasins or mukluks.
